1 bet

a) v. risk ( money) on a race or on some other event of which the result is doubtful

I don’t enjoy betting.

She bet me $20 that I couldn’t be able to give up smoking.

b) v. be certain about sth

I bet it will be fine tomorrow.

c) n. arrangement to risk money

They made a bet on the white horse.

d)v.  opinion , prediction

My bet is that they have got held up in the traffic.

2 permit

a) v. give permission for sth; allow

permit n./pron.

permit sb. to do sth.

permit doing sth.

We don’t permit smoking in the office.

Permit me to explain it.

b) n. 许可证, 通行证

He took out a permit to hunt when the policeman asked why he hunt deer.

3 stare : v. look at sb./sth. with eyes wide open in fixed gaze

It is rude to stare.

4 jealous : adj. feeling or showing love or affection

He was jealous of her success.

5 scream

a) 尖声喊出,喊出,(指风,机器等)发出大而尖的声音

b) n. loud shrill piercing cry or noise

Useful expressions

1 make a bet : 打赌

4 account for : be the explanation of sth, explain cause of sth.

5 to be honest : 老实说

Well, to be honest, I have none.

To be honest, she is very beautiful.

6 in rags : 衣衫漏褴

The old man is in rags.

7 get into trouble: cause trouble for oneself

Even an experienced climber can get into trouble.
